The Magistrates' Court employs people to perform a variety of roles within the court. These include roles in the following business areas:

Trainee Court Registrars

Court Registrars provide administrative support to the Victorian Court system, which has sites throughout Victoria. Becoming a Court Registrar requires an extensive training period, which includes formal study together with on-the-job learning.

The requirements of the role include the following:

  • Work alongside the judiciary in the courtroom, performing a wide range of administrative duties.
  • Provide exceptional levels of customer service to key stakeholders including the judiciary, police, the legal profession, and members of the public with diverse backgrounds and experience.
  • Successfully complete the Certificate IV in Government (Court Services).

Study requirements

If you are selected as a Trainee Registrar, you will be enrolled in a Certificate IV in Government (Court Services) at RMIT. This course will have some classroom-based study, some private study components and on-the-job learning. The course will take 2 years to complete on a part-time basis and will be funded by the courts. At the end of this period, and the successful completion of all subjects, a Trainee may be appointed as a Qualified Court Registrar. You will attend all classes at RMIT within work hours..

Recruitment

The recruitment intake is currently closed. The next recruitment intake will commence in January 2010.  Information will be available on this website and advertisements will appear in The Age and various regional newspapers from early to mid January.

Entrance requirements:

  • VCE (or equivalent). Post secondary qualifications in a relevant field are desirable.
  • Commitment to providing exceptional levels of customer service.
  • Team players with the ability to meet tight deadlines with attention to detail, demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills, and competent computer skills.
  • Ability to organise and prioritise daily work and demonstrated problem solving abilities.
  • Willingness to work at different Court locations within the State.

Salary

The salary range for a Trainee Court Registrar is - $39,000 - $50,083 (As at 1 July 2009)

The commencement salary for Trainee Court Registrars is $39,000.
