On this page you will find information on the Magistrates Court to assist students, teachers, researchers.

Schools Information - Visiting the Magistrates' Court of Victoria

About 13,000 school students visit the Magistrates' Court of Victoria each year. During visits to the Court, a Registrar or Magistrate may be available to talk to your school group about the Court's function and processes. Please enquire when booking your school group's visit. Addresses and contact telephone numbers for all Victorian Magistrates' Courts can be found under 'Court Locations'

Melbourne Magistrates' Court visits

For school groups planning to visit Melbourne Magistrates' Court, please email beryl.threlfall@justice.vic.gov.au to request a visit and, if interested, a talk about the Court's jurisdiction and processes..

In your email, please give the following information:

  • Date of your visit
  • Time of your visit (For a morning talk, students must be assembled on Level 5 at 9.15 am.)
  • Whether you would like a talk about the Magistrates' Court
  • Name of school
  • Number of students visiting
  • Year level of student group
  • Contact name of accompanying teacher
  • Email address of school's contact person for visit
  • Mobile phone number for accompanying teacher, if possible

Once your booking information has been entered into our database, you will receive a confirmation email, with a link to this page of our website, which contains information about the etiquette of visiting the Court and what to bring/what not to bring, as well as educational resources. Please make sure the teacher accompanying your school group has read the Teacher Information Sheet (see below).

If you have booked a talk from a Magistrate or Registrar, please confirm your booking by email to beryl.threlfall@justice.vic.gov.au ON THE DAY PRIOR TO YOUR VISIT, or we cannot guarantee that a presenter will be available.

Teacher Information Sheet

This contains information to assist teachers in preparing their students for a visit to a Magistrates' Court and what to expect on that visit. Schools Feedback Form

The Magistrates' Court of Victoria welcomes feedback from schools and other student visitors. If you would like to comment on your tour of the court, or the information available to students, please fill in this form and send it to help@magistratescourt.vic.gov.au  The form can be downloaded through the link in the panel on the right of this page.

Danielle Come To Judgment - a model criminal hearing in the Magistrates' Court

Designed to give VCE students an understanding of the way the Magistrates' Court operates, this entertaining, fully scripted hearing incorporates a comprehensive overview of the Court's criminal jurisdiction, the roles of court officers and hearing procedures. The script is accompanied by student activities, including an observation assignment at the Magistrates' Court, which may be adapted to suit other year levels.  This may be downloaded from the Victorian Law Foundation website through the link in the panel on the right of this page.

This Powerpoint presentation gives information about the Magistrates' Court of Victoria - its jurisdiction, specialist courts and court services.  Teachers and students are welcome to download the presentation from the link in the panel on the right of this page.  If you are planning a visit to the Magistrates' Court, viewing the Powerpoint presentation before your visit is recommended.
