New Directions for the Court
The Magistrates' Court of Victoria is embarking on a process of modernising and improving services to ensure it remains flexible, responsive to change and able to deliver appropriate access to justice services.
The Court has a proud tradition of serving the Victorian public over the past 170 years and has a long history of doing things differently and better.
New Directions for the Magistrates' Court of Victoria 2008-2011 sets out the initiatives the Court will undertake to meet its vision of being Australia's leading court of summary jurisdiction in 2015.
The result of the Magistrates' Court 2015 Project — a partnership between the Magistrates' Court and the Department of Justice — New Directions is expected to deliver:
- better support for the vulnerable and victims of crime
- access to alternative ways of resolving disputes and quick access to the Court when needed
- better integration of specialist services and therapeutic approaches
- more Court's services available online
- more highly skilled Court staff to support the Magistracy
- well trained and supported Court staff with a stronger career path
- closer partnerships and linkages with the community, the Department of Justice, partners in the justice system and other agencies.
New Directions builds on reforms already underway in the Court that deliver on commitments in the Attorney-General's Justice Statement 2004-2014. Focusing on 2008-2011, New Directions outlines priority initiatives under three strategic objectives.
