Youth Justice Court Advice Service
The Youth Justice Court Advice Service (YJ CAS) is a specialised youth-focused service provided by the Department of Human Services (DHS) Youth Justice program for young people between 18 and 20 years of age who are appearing in the Magistrates’, County or Supreme courts in relation to criminal matters. The primary focus of YJ CAS is the diversion of young offenders from the adult criminal justice system, where appropriate.
YJ CAS also provides court advice to Children’s Courts.
Who can make a referral to YJ CAS?
Legal representatives, magistrates and judges can request the assistance of the YJ CAS service for a young person. In addition, the young person, their family members and / or community agencies supporting them may also make a referral.
What services are provided by YJ CAS?
Services are provided by a CAS worker within the Magistrates’ Court of Victoria include:
- Making assessments in regard to a young person’s suitability for a Youth Justice Centre order as requested by the court.
- Providing advice to the courts and legal personnel in relation to a young person undergoing an existing youth justice centre order.
- Providing case management and supervision for young people who are subject to a Youth Justice supervised bail order or a deferral of sentence.
- Providing court advice in relation to available bail support services, including accommodation and appropriate treatment or program availability.
- Liaison with judges and magistrates, legal and court personnel, court support services and other key stakeholders to co-ordinate advice and services for young people with multiple needs.
